Toastmasters is a world wide, non-profit organisation run
entirely by members. World Headquarters is in Santa Anna, California
from where the educational manuals and materials are published and
distributed. There are 44 clubs in the Wellington/HuttValley/Gold Coast
regions and it is the fastest growing voluntary organisation in New
Zealand.
At every Toastmasters meeting, every member has a role. No one ever
sits through a meeting without participating. You may be scheduled to
give one of the speeches, or to evaluate the speech of another
member. You could be the timekeeper with a stopwatch and a set of
coloured lights to tell speakers when their time is up. Or you might
participate in the ‘Impromptu Speaking’ session. Once you
get experienced you will be scheduled to Chair and organise the
meeting. Within a very short time, you will find that your confidence
and ability at public speaking rises dramatically. As does your
leadership skills.
Toastmasters is not for people who are good at public speaking.
Toastmasters is for people who are scared out of their wits at the
thought of it. The interesting thing about Toastmasters, is that once
they get some experience, you can’t shut them up.
Ohariu has a range diverse range of fascinating members. Come and meet them.
The Cost?
It depends upon the time of the year you join. There is a joining fee
which goes to World Headquarters from whom you receive the New Members
Kitset containing your personal Communication Manual which outlines the
10 Speech Assignments to be given at the club over the course of two
years. It also contains your Leadership Manual, plus other Educational
Manuals ranging from ‘How to Conduct a Meeting’ to
‘Giving Effective Evaluations’, there is also the cost we
pay to hire the Johnsonville Community Centre Rooms, and of course, to
provide Coffee, Tea, and biscuits. All in all it equates to about a cup
of cappuccino a week.
The
Mission of
Toastmasters International
Toastmasters International is the leading movement devoted to making
effective oral communication a worldwide reality. Through its member
Clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of
speaking, listening, and thinking - vital skills that promote
self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human
understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind. It is basic
to this mission that Toastmasters International continually expand its
worldwide network of Clubs, thereby offering ever-greater numbers of
people the opportunity to benefit from its programs.
SpeechCraft
/ Youth Leadership Courses:
We occasionally run speechcraft courses, these are intensive training
over 6 or 8 sessions. We did a Speechcraft Course for the Medical
Assurance Association of Johnsonville in 2008, and a Public Speaking
and Leadership Course for the Federation of Farmers. Contact Rob if
interested.
Youth Leadership is a very successful programme run
each Term 1 for the Senior Students at Wadestown School.
